Registers
Four-region defect register
A major Australian rail operator, maintenance engineering
The situation
Corrective work (the defects found, prioritised and scheduled) was tracked per region. Each register had grown to fit its own region’s habits. That is fine locally and expensive centrally: you cannot compare regions, you cannot roll up a national picture, and every improvement has to be made four times.
What we built
A single register structure for corrective work, split by discipline, deployed to SharePoint so every region works from the same live document rather than emailed copies.
- One structure across all four regions, for both tamping and profiling work.
- Deployed on SharePoint: simultaneous editing, available on site, no version ambiguity about which copy is current.
- A supporting analysis layer over track geometry measurement data, so defects above threshold are identified from the measurement runs rather than found by eye.
The result
The regions kept working the way they need to, but the data underneath is now comparable. A national view is a rollup rather than a reconciliation project, and an improvement to the register is made once.
